Georgia Land Surveyor Requirements

Current State Requirements for a Land Surveyor in the State of Georgia:

15 PDH minimum biennially

Land surveyors must ensure that, once every five (5) years, at least six (6) PDH's in "Minimum Technical Standards" be included in their PDH's acquired. The state of Georgia does not pre-approve any continuing education materials from any providers for land surveyors. The licensee is responsible for locating a quality source of continuing education and reporting their activities to the Board and should be ready to defend those activities if audited and challenged.

Dual Registrants: Registrants with a dual license are required to obtain thirty (30) PDH units per renewal period. If a dual registrant exceeds the requirement in any biennial renewal period, a maximum of fifteen (15) PDH’s may be carried forward into the subsequent renewal period. At least one-third (1/3) of the PDH’s in a renewal period must be obtained in engineering, and one-third (1/3) in surveying. The remaining units may be in either field, at the discretion of the registrant.

Renewal Dates:

Renewal occurs December 31 of even years. Renewal forms are mailed in November.

Renewals postmarked subsequent to December 31 will require a $50.00 renewal fee plus a penalty of $125.00 for each year of delinquency.

Licenses that have expired for more than four (4) years are automatically revoked per OCGA 43-15-17(b).

Statute: Chapter 180-11


The Board has final authority regarding:
(1) Approval of courses, classes, seminars, meetings, and all other methods of satisfying the PDH requirements.
(2) The number of PDH’s allocated to each course, class, seminar, meeting, and any other method of satisfying the PDH requirements.

Reinstatement: A registrant may bring an inactive or suspended (provided all other conditions of the suspension are filled) license to active status by obtaining all delinquent PDH’s. A minimum of 7.5 PDH’s are required for each year in an inactive or suspended status for land surveyors, up to a maximum of 15 PDH’s.

Comity: The Board shall recognize the continuing education requirements imposed by other states to the extent that such continuing education courses meet the requirement the requirements imposed by the Board.
(1) Comity/Out-of Georgia state residents will be required to keep record keeping as listed in the proof of compliance section below.
(2) If you are currently registered in and a resident of one of the following jurisdictions which has mandatory CPC requirements, you may certify that you have met all CPC and licensure requirements in that jurisdiction. (Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Kansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming.
(3) You must maintain logs of your professional development hour (PDH) activities earned from that state and make them available to the Board only in the event you are audited.

Applicable Course of Study

All activities for which PDH credit are claimed must be relevant to the practice of land surveying within the registrant’s field of practice and may include technical, ethical, or managerial content. These activities should advance the professional or technical competence of the registrant. Qualifying CPC activities may be sponsored or presented by college or universities, by employers, by government agencies, by nationally affiliated land surveying technical or professional societies, or by other organizations. The Board does not pre-approve courses for PDH credit. It is your responsibility to assure that the activities in which you participate meet the requirements. Qualifying activities to meet Georgia’s CPC requirement may be earned in any state. A PDH credit is roughly equivalent to one clock hour of instruction and should be rounded to the nearest half hour.

PDH credit may be earned for the following:
(1) Successful completion of college courses.
(2) Successful completion of continuing education courses.
(3) Successful completion of correspondence, televised, videotaped, audio taped, and other short courses/tutorials taken for the purpose of maintaining, improving, or expanding the skills and knowledge relevant to the land surveyor’s practice.
(4) Presenting or attending seminars, in house courses, workshops, or professional or technical presentations made at meetings, conventions or conferences which are relevant to the land surveyor’s practice.
(5) Authoring published papers, articles, or books in any area relevant to the land surveyor’s practice.
(6) Receiving patents in any area relevant to the land surveyor’s practice.
(7) Completing or attending qualifying courses, seminars, instruction, in-house programs, or training
(8) Attending technical or professional society meetings when a land surveying topic is presented as a principal part of the program and covers topics within your area of practice.
(9) Teaching a course for the first time or if substantial time has been spent in updating material if previously taught
(10) Attending satellite video courses where attendance is verified and program material meets the requirements
(11) Language courses or software instructional courses which relate to the improvement of one's business or profession.

Typical Non-Qualifying Activities:
(1) Regular employment
(2) Courses in real estate licensing
(3) Personal estate and financial planning
(4) Courses in self-study or personal self-improvement
(5) Service club meetings or activities
(6) Equipment demonstrations or trade shows
(7) Topics not relevant to land surveying
(8) Enrollment without attendance in courses or seminars, etc.
(9) Repetitive teaching of the same course without updating the course material; attending committee and business meetings of any organization
(10) Conversational language courses for personal use.

Engineering related activities will not qualify as meeting the requirements of land surveying.

The conversion of other units of credit to Professional Development Hours is as follows:
(1) 1 college unit or semester hour 45 PDH
(2) 1 college or semester quarter hour 30 PDH
(3) 1 continuing education unit 10 PDH
(4) 1 hour of professional development in course work, seminars, examination preparations made at meetings, conventions, or conferences. (For teaching of professional development coursework, apply a multiple of tow (2). Teaching credit is valid for teaching a course or seminar for the first time only. Teaching credit does not apply to full time faculty. 1 PDH
(5) Authoring published papers, articles, or books in any area relevant to the land surveyor’s practice. 10 PDH
(6) Each patent in any area relevant to the land surveyor’s practice. 10 PDH

Proof of Compliance

Maintaining records to support PDH’s claimed is the responsibility of the registrant. Records required include:
(1) A log showing the type of activity, sponsoring organization, location, duration, instructor’s or speaker’s name, and PDH’s earned.
(2) Attendance verification records in the form of completion certificates, or other documents supporting evidence of attendance; or records as maintained by professional organizations, or other similar repositories designated by the Board.
(3) The log records described in Rule 180-11-.06(1) and (2) must be maintained for a period of four (4) years. Included with all license renewal applications will be a continuing education summary log form that the registrant must use to summarize the professional development hours for which he/she has requested credit during the current biennial period. In the case of an audit, this form must supply sufficient detail relevant to continuing education hours claimed in order to permit the Board to complete its audit.



The Board shall randomly audit some applicants for renewal of a certificate of registration to enforce compliance. If the registrant, after 180 days, has not obtained the requisite PDH's, the license will be revoked until such time as the units are obtained.

Disallowed Credits

A registrant will not be renewed unless he/she certifies on the application renewal form that the requirements for PDH units have been met. If the Board determines that some credits are unacceptable, the registrant will have 180 days to obtain PDH units that are acceptable. If the registrant, after 180 days, has not obtained the required PDH’s, the license will be revoked until such time as the units are obtained.

Carryover Hours Allowed

7.5 PDH per renewal period


Registrants licensed by way of examination or comity shall be exempt from their first renewal period only.

A land surveyor serving on temporary duty in the armed forces of the United States for a period of time exceeding one hundred twenty (120) consecutive days shall be exempt from obtaining 7.5 of the professional development hours required during the biennial period in which the majority of the days of duty fall.

Those in foreign employment or a non-career military registrant serving on active duty for over 120 consecutive days may be exempted upon Board approval. Supporting documentation will be required.

Registrants experiencing physical disability, serious illness or injury of a nature and duration which has prohibited completing CPC requirements during the two years prior to the renewal period, may be exempted. Supporting documentation will be required.

Registrants over the age of 65 who have applied for an inactive license, who list their occupation as “Retired” or “Inactive” on the Board-approved renewal form, and who further certify that they are no longer receiving an remuneration from providing land surveying services shall be exempt from professional development hours. In the event such a person elects to return to active practice of land surveying, professional development hours must be earned as described in 180-11-.08 before returning to active practice. These individuals may continue to use the words Land Surveyor (L.S.) after their name as long as they continue to fall under the restrictions specified and are not actively practicing land surveying.

Those who qualify for "Retired" status. Retired Status means that the registrant is totally separated from the profession of engineering and/or land surveying in Georgia and all other states; the words engineer, engineering, land surveyor or land surveying do not appear in the registrant's work title; the registrant is not employed with a company or organization which performs or offers to perform engineering or land surveying services or a company or organization which uses engineering or land surveying in the company title; and the registrant, as an individual, is not performing or offering to perform engineering or land surveying services or making engineering or land surveying decisions.

If you qualify for an exemption, you will be required to certify to your exemption on the renewal form. Exemption requested for “Other” reasons will require a letter of explanation.
